If You Didn’t Already Know Hot Wheels is 50 this Year

Hot Wheels celebrated its fifth year producing its line of toy cars in 1968, a good year I graduated from high school.  So Autoweek magazine created a one-of-a-kind installation on the track at Detroit's Lexus Velodrome and invited a bunch of local schoolkids and Hot Wheels design boss Ted Wu to check it out.

Autoweek started with 10,000 new-in-package cars donated by Mattel. They spent hours tearing the cars out of their boxes and many more sticking 8200 of the cars to the track.

After 50 years they are still popular, especially with my grand kids.  They have a 25’ flexible race track they set up and love race their Hot Wheel cars down it.
